Synopsis

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself-and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Enchanted Book Nook
June 27th, 2015
My Review: American Singer lives in a world where rankings rule. The higher your ranking, the poorer you are, and the less you contribute to society. For America, she and her family are 5’s, and life is hard, barely having enough food or money to support the family. However, their lives just might change forever. 35 girls are in competition with each other to win the heart of Prince Maxon and wear the crown. For America, the Selection is a nightmare, how can she possibly love someone like Maxon? Especially when her heart is committed to someone else? All right, so I have some mixed feelings about this book. First off, I want to say that I always try my best to never compares books. But sometimes those thoughts creep up and there’s nothing you can do to stop them. All I could think about during the first few chapters of this book was how it echoed Amiee Carter’s Pawn. I was going to list a few similarities, but I decided against that. I have the 50 page rule, if I do not like the book within 50 pages, I move on. But thank goodness I gave it a try! While those similarities were hard to get past, and mind kept going back to Pawn, the rest of the book was amazing! The farther in the book the less those similarities kind of faded a little so I was able to get into the book much better. During the last 5 or so chapters, I had a hard time putting the book down, I had to see what would happen next. I loved the Bachelor aspect of the book, and it was just a very good read. However, there was something that annoyed me to now end, and reading other reviews of this book, I know I’m not alone. The names. The names in this book drive me batty! While some are not too bad like Sylvia, America, Celeste. Others just made my skin crawl when I read them, they were a little on the silly side like New Asia, Amberly, and Sosie to name a few. Something else that bothered me was the use of “whisper-yelled” I thought when it was used, it was again on the silly side. Overall though, the book was really a good read, I already have the 2nd book in the series waiting for me to read, and I’m excited to so. I’m rooting for America and Maxon to fall in love! I think America is too good for Aspen, I think he’s just playing games with her. Positive Elements: America is a strong young woman. Negative Elements: America’s mother is so high strung, and can come off rude on occasion. She seems to want nothing more in life than to run America’s life, and it seems that no matter what she and her family have it never is enough. There were a few swear words in the book like hell and dam*. Spiritual Elements: During one of the rebel attacks some of the Selected were praying. Other Thoughts: This really was a good read, and can’t wait to see what is in store for America.

Couldn't put it down.

I'm not a dystopian fan at all, but I couldn't put down this book. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy chick-lit for young adults. For those who may not be interested in the dystopian genre, I’d say for them to give it a shot. I did and I wasn’t disappointed. I’ve very much looking forward to reading the next books in this series.

I choose to focus on my choice
July 9th, 2014
Interesting dystopian romance novel, I loved the narrator's sense of humor and her general outlook on her somewhat twisted situation. Through the descriptions, I've become a fan of her dresses...and the royal food as well! I thought it was really interesting how the story not only builds up the romantic relationship between America and Maxon, but also hints at her intrinsic potential as a strong, intelligent and benevolent princess. As for the love triangle, I've been rooting for Aspen but I'm predicting she'll end up with Maxon, if only because she's seems to be the only one capable of fulfilling the duties of a princess, of a ruler's wife. In the beginning, I couldn't help but notice quite a few similarities with Collins' The Hunger Games, but it was nothing too dramatic; the overall upbeat atmosphere of the book, the essence of the characters and the focus on romance ultimately rendered The Selection distinctive enough. After the first few chapters, I wasn't able put it down!

Pretty Good
June 10th, 2014
While not much of a literary achievement, the story is interesting and the romance intriguing. It keeps you coming back for more. With a Hunger Games meets The Bachelor feel, it did not feel very original, but the characters were endearing enough. It makes a nice, light summer read. I'll be reading the second book.

My favourite book and definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a dystopian read with enough romance and action to keep you reading until the wee hours of the morning. It is a fresh story that I thought had the perfect balance of everything I was looking for. I was sick of fluffy romance novels but couldn't sit through another "the world is ending, lets save it". It took both the things I had grown tired of and added an interesting spin. There is a sort of love triangle, which was the only thing that got to me, but its ok, because there is an obvious winner. Oh and last thing- the setting. Cass uses just enough description to put me into her beautiful world and see the wonderful parties without overdoing it. So pretty much you need to read this. now. Only downfall - the last book comes out May 6, its just too long to wait!

Here's a quote from the Acknowledgments at the end of the book that couldn't be any more true. "Okay, just in case you're really busy or tired because you stayed up late finishing, I want to thank you first for reading my book." YUP! The second one is me! I'm the type of girl who's in bed by 11, and sleeping by 12. But this book kept me awake until 3:30am just so that I could finish it. Considering I read this whole book in one sitting, I have to give it a 5 star! I can't wait to pick up the next one. I'm shocked about how good this book is, since I mainly wanted to read it as I was intrigued by the cover. Who can refuse to read a book with a pretty dress on the cover. The writing is easy to read, and the story is well written and interesting. I must say, the main character in this book is very easy to love, and it was nice to see her stay true to herself throughout the entire book.

This is now one of my favorite books (and trilogies). It's fun, fresh and exciting. The premise of it awesomely thought out. And even though love triangle develops, Cass did it in a way that is not clichéd nor boring. Even the names are beautifully chosen. America is an very interesting protagonist, and I instantly fell in love with Maxton.

The idea of this book is amazing. Being swept up into beautiful dresses and a luxurious palace is basically every girls dream. Even mine sometimes! Honestly, though, I still can't get over the idea of so many girls competing to win this prince's heart. I know this is a different world where being chosen means no more poverty, no more making sure there's enough food to last for the week, making sure that everyone's taken care of, but still it feels so barbaric to have a competition to win some dude's affection. I sure don't want anyone's affection if I have to compete for it! But anyways, this was a rather interesting story and one I'm going to continue reading because the dresses are pretty!

February 24th, 2013
I really would not qualify this as a dystopian YA romance. It is definitely long on romance and short on the dystopia. Perhaps the second book will give more detail on why things are as they are and what the rebels are really trying to accomplish. The love triangle is quite well done. I like both young men and I see why America is torn. I think she could influence idealistic Prince Maxon into truly helping the country improve and abolish that silly caste system. However, I do think we have that in our country today. It is just not that formalized and strict. Anyone who enjoys a Cinderella romance that just happens to be set in a vaguely medieval future should enjoy this. If you are into serious dystopian novels with lots of world building then you might want to give this a pass. As for me, I enjoyed it because I still like fairy tales.
