Synopsis

"There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve," Neeve said. "Either you're his true love . . . or you killed him." It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them--not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain. He has it all--family money, good looks, devoted friends--but he's looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore. From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we've never been before.

i had high expectations for this book and by superb standards it completely blew past my expectations entirely. the characters are rich and engrossing, the romance is not the main point but a sweet addition, and the sheer magic of the world within these pages leaves you in wonder for hours. maggie stiefvater is my new favorite author, and this series is one i hold dear now.

Don't believe the blurb.

Not the lame cheesy teen paranormal romance I expected. Clever plot, complex and intruiging characters, and evocative imagey. Loved it.

Cheesy, simple, good for an afternoon of light reading. Too much teen drama but with a few surprising twists.

Pretty good

I can't ever help my self, and I skip ahead. What I read ahead was really good, but the plot and main focus of the story is kind of boring in the beginning.

After my disappointment in her Shiver/Linger/Forever books, I wasn't sure I wanted to read more books by Ms. Stiefvater. But The Scorpio Races was so darned good and left such an impression on me that I really hoped that I would see more books by this particular author. The Raven Boys is filled with things I love in a good gothic styled, myth laden, adventure tale. The Raven Boys feels both possible and improbable. There is a feeling that all this could really happen - you willing suspend your disbelief. Something about this book makes me think that ley lines could actually be hiding a sleeping king. A sleeping king that will grant you your heart's desire. I can believe that a rich, spoiled boy can be sweet and sensitive and somehow well respected in scientific (well, pseudo-scientific) circles. That maybe psychics can truly see into your future. And maybe someone can reach into their dreams and make those dreams real. That magic truly does exist.

This is probably the best book I've ever read. The story line is phenomenal in itself, but the best part about this book is simply the way the author drags you in, holds you there and never lets you go. I've never come across a writer who can describe characters through analogies like Maggie. The way she describes them makes you want to become, in some way, more like her characters. I would highly recommend this read to anyone who will listen.

overall a good story! the world building and creativity was wonderful and fresh. the characters were interesting and believable for the genre. the one downer for me was how long it took for the book to really start. although, things did happen throughout the first half, the pace and my interest didn't really pick up till halfway through the book. I will read book 2, but when its a little cheaper.

Favourite book of 2013
September 30th, 2013
When I first read this book I thought it was good at the start something you could pick up and happily read for an hour or two but by the end I was hooked! And since December I've read it another 2 times, I can't wait to read sequel-favourite book of the year.

Interesting Plot. Full of potential.
May 26th, 2013
It did not grip my attention and it felt boring most times but the plot is interesting ley lines and sleeping kings and all. Gangsey's character kept me reading but it was so dragging and I did not connect with the raven boys. The redeeming quality is the ending it was spectacular and it might just keep me reading the series. If the whole books was like the last 10% of this book then it would have been awesome. I would have rated this 2 if it hadn't been for the ending.
