Synopsis

On a cold November morning, a jogger runs through the woods in the peaceful Quebec village of Three Pines. On his run, he finds a dead man hanging from a tree. The dead man had been a guest at the local Inn and Spa. He might have been looking for peace and quiet, but something else found him. Something horrible. Did the man take his own life? Or was he murdered? Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called to the crime scene. As Gamache follows the trail of clues, he opens a door into the past. And he learns the true reason why the man came to Three Pines. This novella is a quick and easy read for people on the go.

I enjoyed this story. A big fan of Louise Penny even in novella form. Looking forward to her next novel.

I love Louise Penny's novels but...
July 17th, 2014
I struggled between giving this novella 2 or 3 stars. I decided on 3 because the ending had a satisfactory twist and resolution. The disappointing fact for me is that this novella acts as a perfect example of "show don't tell." Understandably the plot has to concise and the writing efficient but The Hangman felt like 13 chapters of telling the story. I wanted to get caught up in the mystery but the tale was always skimming the surface. It almost felt as though it was ghost-written by someone with mediocre talent. It was certainly not the same quality as the novels. Writing is difficult and in my humble opinion Louise Penny is much better suited to novels. Part of what makes her stories so un-put-down-able is the vibrant setting and the almost-flesh-and-blood characters. I would much rather read something in which she took her time setting up for us and creating a tale that absorbs me than a story where she's done all the work and I'm being carried along like a passive audience member. I may try future novels by Ms. Penny but for the foreseeable future, I'll stick to her novels.

This mystery story was too simplistic and devoid of the warm atmosphere found in the author's novels.

I found The Hangman a good shorter than usual mystery story as any Penny books with Gamache as the usual entertaining character.
