Synopsis

Something Borrowed

Emily Giffin

The smash-hit debut novel for every woman who has ever had a complicated love-hate friendship.

Rachel White is the consummate good girl. A hard-working attorney at a large Manhattan law firm and a diligent maid of honor to her charmed best friend Darcy, Rachel has always played by all the rules. Since grade school, she has watched Darcy shine, quietly accepting the sidekick role in their lopsided friendship. But that suddenly changes the night of her thirtieth birthday when Rachel finally confesses her feelings to Darcy's fiance, and is both horrified and thrilled to discover that he feels the same way. As the wedding date draws near, events spiral out of control, and Rachel knows she must make a choice between her heart and conscience. In so doing, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.

Okay, but lacked depth.

The characters seemed shallow. The second book had more depth to it. I enjoyed the read as a mindless easy read, but enjoyed the second one better.

This book was a fun light summer vacation reading. Best for sitting at the beach soaking up the sun and being a part of the lives of these crazy charectors.

boring characters

Ethan and Hillary were the only characters that I liked. Everyone else were so annoying. No character development for any of them. Dex and Rachel were both spineless. The story itself was good although cheating is never OK no matter then circumstances

Surprisingly Good

I picked up with this book because the movie was coming out. And I'm a sucker of challenging myself to read it before I see the story on the big screen. The story is about Darcy and Rachel, two best friends since time could tell, from the same hometown and somehow they find each other in a love triangle. I liked the story because it shows that not necessarily all relationships are good because they are old. It portrayed a very co-dependent and toxic relationship between the best of friends. It was a fun book to read for sure.

Completely vapid. No real character. Just "I love him and I need him" over and over.

Easy read. Definitely an ethical dilemma. I wasn't keen on the final decisions the main characters made. Not a feel good ending.

A highly entertaining, engrossing novel about a woman who falls in love with her best friend's fiance. As horrible as the scenario seems, you can't help but relate to and sympathize for Rachel in this moving and at times hilarious novel. 'Something Borrowed' is far from the typical chick-lit books in its genres, and is one of the best books I've ever read.

I loved this book. I need a book to grab me from the beginning or I'm not interested....this book did just that. I couldn't wait to read Something Blue. Great read.

Better than average chick lit. I liked that this story had some complicated situations and wasn't resolved with a perfect fairy tale ending. Worth reading on a rainy day with a blanket and some hot chocolate.

I picked this book up for a beach read, but it stuck around in my brain long after my holiday had finished. This book explores an interesting moral situation - what do you when you and your best friend's fiance fall in love? Emily Giffin prevents this tale from becoming too fraught and angsty by making Darcy difficult to like, thus making the reader sympathise all the more with Rachel. The romance between Rachel and Dex is both grand and nuanced - I really found myself rooting for them against my better judgement. With its sequel, Something Blue, Giffin looks at life-long female friendships, and what happens when the "beta" friend decides she's had enough.

I love the way Emily Giffin writes her novels. You fall in love with the characters and go through each of their experiences with them. I have read all her books but I have to say this one is my favorite!
