Another great story from Ken Follett

A Place Called Freedom starts in Scotland & ends in Virginia following the interconnected lives of Mack, a Scottish coal miner owned by the folks whose land he lives on, and Lizzie, from the rich & powerful landowners class. Friends as children, their plights touch each other many times until, at last, they both discover the truths within themselves leading each of them to their own "freedom". Full of history, adventure & romance, evident in many of Follett's stories, this one too is sure to keep you guessing right to the very end. While we know of the slave trade in North America, it's equally offensive to find it was alive & well between classes in European society at the same time binding people & their families through both political means and practiced customs.

    appropriate title-

Excellent story line-fast paced. Interesting to learn of the fight for freedom being fought by people other than black Americans. Never wanted to stop reading!

    A good light read!

Gripping story that moves from an 18th century Scottish coal mining area to London to revolutionary Virginia, with realistic historical detail. The plot is driven by class conflict, sexual tension, jealousy, and greed. The characters are not very complex, however, and tend to be one-dimensional.
