Synopsis

Kafka on the Shore is powered by two remarkable characters: a teenage boy, Kafka Tamura, who runs away from home either to escape a gruesome oedipal prophecy or to search for his long-missing mother and sister; and an aging simpleton called Nakata, who never recovered from a wartime affliction and now is drawn toward Kafka for reasons that, like the most basic activities of daily life, he cannot fathom.

As their paths converge, and the reasons for that convergence become clear, Haruki Murakami enfolds readers in a world where cats talk, fish fall from the sky, and spirits slip out of their bodies to make love or commit murder. Kafka on the Shore displays one of the world’s great storytellers at the peak of his powers.

    A masterpiece

A great book from Japan's greatest living author. If anyone is interested in getting diving into the world of Haruki Murakami, this is the place to start.

    Doesn't add up

The story has many unanswered questions. It's not like left for the reader to decide, but more like the author just didn't follow plots and decided to go other ways. There're lot of chapters that are not necessary

    Surreal

I chose this book because the library described was on the top 10 list. I was not disappointed. It is a library I would love to visit. The book however was a little deep for me. It is filled with metaphor I sometimes had difficulty with. Well written and very interesting characters. I give it three stars due to my own non comprehension. Not a fault of the book.

    Exceptionally Creative Story

If you've ever read Murakami, you'll know to expect interesting worlds, complex characters, thought provoking quests, bizarre animals and a story that takes you places you never thought possible. This is an exceptional version of the Murakami novel and lands in my Top 3 of his books.
