Synopsis

A top nuclear scientist goes mad and takes an innocent family hostage at gunpoint, killing one and causing a massive standoff.
A plume of radiation above New York City leads to a warehouse where, it seems, a powerful nuclear bomb was assembled just hours before.
Sifting through the evidence, authorities determine that the unthinkable is about to happen: in ten days, a major American city will be vaporized by a terrorist attack.
Ten days. And Gideon Crew, tracking the mysterious terrorist cell from the suburbs of New York to the mountains of New Mexico, learns the end may be something worse--far worse--than mere Armageddon.

Preston & Child are at the top of my list in the genre of suspense thrillers and crime mystery fictions. Gideon Crew is a superbly unique character that reminds me of fantasy writer Stephen R. Donaldson's main character Thomas Covenant when it comes down to reluctant heroes. Gideon, you see, is dying. He has been convinced by an organization and an equally interesting character who runs this organization that since Gideon has little to loose, that makes him the ideal investigator. Gideon is really not that big on that train of thought, but the pay is good and it's not likely he really has anything better to do than sit around and wait for the inevitable. Problem is, Gideon still is a soft touch and puts himself deeply into his investigations where there is intrigue, misleading evidence, people who are not what they seem to be, things that seem to be normal are not, and then poor Gideon is a romantic. This book and the previous one and like all books written by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child are highly sophisticated and sprinkled with devilish humor. There is no wasted paragraphs on useless details just to fill space, this is intelligent story telling not a tedious overture. You will want to turn the pages. You will be gravitated to the plot, the adventure, the intense drama of the mysteries as they unfold. This is the most refreshing style of story telling in the fictional genre of Mystery and Suspense. Five stars.
