Synopsis

Ken Follett’s magnificent new historical epic begins, as five interrelated families move through the momentous dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.

A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man’s world in the mining pits.…An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House.… A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy.…And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.

From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes us into the inextricably entangled fates of five families—and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again.…

This is the first novel I have read that is set in the WW1 era. The fictional character's lives, intertwined with those of historical characters made this book an interesting read. On to book 2 of the series. I read book 3 first so I am looking forward to more on the back stories of those characters.

Intéressant, avec des réserves.
January 31st, 2015

love History

As a high school history teacher it was great to see the acurate use of events in the story. Perhaps a bit less coverage of WWI as it was too slow moving in parts of this event.

Having read Pillars of the Earth twice (what a great read!), I was really looking forward to this epic series. It does not disappoint. What an excellent blending of historical fact and fiction. Mr. Follett certainly knows how to bring his characters to life. Now to the next chapter.

Terrific read!

I have come to rely on ken follett for engrossing stories, told with straight forward language. Engrossing characters (though they sometimes are one dimensional in their thinking). What I really like about his characters is they are differently motivated which makes forms rich tapestry of stories that intertwine. Looking forward to the next one.

August 12th, 2014
While not as engrossing as Pillars of the Earth or World Without End, and while the connections among the characters are sometimes unbelievably unexpected, Fall of Giants is another great historical epic from Follett. Now I'm ready for book two of this trilogy: Winter of the World.

I love this book. As far as I can tell it is historically accurate. At the same time it is very gripping. I could not stop until I finished the book. And then I felt like I lost a good friend and went looking for the next book. I highly recommend this book.

This book is totally worth to read. I am not at all a history buff or by any means a person that would usually consider this kind of story. That's why I had doubts beforehand thinking this book, let alone the whole trilogy, might be a bit boring and rather dry. I was wrong and I am very glad I did give it a try. I enjoyed the many different characters and the unexpected twists and turns along the way. Not to mention that I did learn quite a bit from this book. Now I am very eager to read the second one, Winter of the World.

I'm a sucker for war movies and stories so what's not to like? This was a great read and a great education on the first war through the eyes of characters who lived it. I was searching my archived books and took a second look at this. Not like me, but I'm reading it again. I thought I'd prepare to read the next in the two part series.

Writing style is excellent, not superflouis. This book gives an unbiased account of major events of WW1. What makes it truly unique is the story is told from many different viewpoints, from a poor coal miner to an earl, so the reader can see how the war affected all social classes. Truly amazing.
