Synopsis

ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King—who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer—takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away—a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life—like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963—turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Thought inspiring. An opportunity to live and remember the past. I saw more as a love story than the typical SK books.

Excellent read, enjoyed the story line. Nothing to do with Mr. King's writing but far too many format errors for an ebook.

Great book as you can always expect from Stephen King. I always have trouble following the time travel themes but thought he did a great job with it and I was able to follow it easily. It provokes some thought regarding whether things should be changed if they can be. Great read!

A history lesson
November 7th, 2014
If I wasn't so busy I probably would have read this book cover to cover. Many of the details Mr. King includes in this work regarding the late 50's and early 60's brought back many memories. Little details I had forgotten as I was only 12 years old when I heard President Kennedy had been shot over my 6th grade classroom loudspeaker. Of course time-travel stories as a genre' is a favorite of mine. To future readers, I hope you enjoy this trip as much as I.

One of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors! From my first Stephen King novel (Firestarter) in Grade 9 I have been hooked. The idea of what could happen if one little thing in our lives had happened in a different way is something I'm sure we all think about. This novel leads us through the good and the bad that are possible and was a book I was unable to put down from the moment I picket it up!

King writes about a seminal moment for boomers everywhere (JFK's shooting) and ties that in with an angle loved by fans of alternate history: what if it someone managed to prevent Kennedy's assassination? The writing is, by and large, first rate. The characters are well-drawn and the time travel method interesting in the limitations King devises. Here's the "but": If only some brave editor would take a blue pencil and trim some of the verbiage that accompanies a King novel, 11/22/63 included. It would still highlight his quality writing but not require the reader to wade through 30 pages when 10 would suffice. Think of the forests we could save. If you can get past that limitation, you're in for a good read.

I loved this book. Really great take on the kinds of issues that the whole idea of time travel, changing history and the "butterfly effect" bring up. I felt that it didn't really come together in the end like I might have expected, and was therefore slightly disappointed, but really, it's a great read. So tempting to get into it too far and give away 'spoilers', and don't want to do that! It's a very long book, but well worth the time spent!!

Falls short as a novel, but as a Stephen King it is the same old thing. Corny ideas, absurd humour of going back to change history: that is to prevent the Kennedy assassination which gorifying spousal abuse at all times rages thru the book. Thanks for now, Stevy

I enjoyed this book. It was a fast read even though a long book and satisfying the way a fairy tale used to be when I was a kid. I enjoyed the journey into that pristine and fateful time of "Camelot" and the sweet yearning of what might have been. Especially tainted by King's slightly off kilter perspective.

Different from a lot of other Stephen King novels. This one was not too long or verbose, like some of his books can get. People who don't really like horror stories would like this. Great characters - reminded me of his short stories - great story and well-rounded characters. Loved it!

It has been some time since I've been as excited to continue a book as I was while reading 11/22/63. I've been a Stephen King fan since I was in the 5th grade (I know, seems a young age to start reading King) and I have to say that 11/22/63 is definitely one of my most favorite. King takes us back in time to see an incredible story unfold as he explores the ultimate "what if" scenario. Along the way, one can’t help but fall in love with the characters. I was moved to tears at the very end (I should say full blown sobs, to be completely honest). For all of you constant readers out there, this is an absolute must read, one I look forward to enjoying all over again sometime.

This is my second Stephen King novel, after having read Under The Dome. It was thoroughly enjoyable with lots of page-turning scenes, some touching moments and lots of historical detail. King has a very readable style and really shapes his narrative voice to capture the emotion of whatever is happening in the story at the time. And yes, it has a very satisfying ending.

Absolutely loved the idea of going back in time and stopping the Kennedy assassination in 1963. If Kennedy wasn't shot then, what would our world be like now? How the smallest changes in time, unfold into huge events later affecting us in ways we didn't see coming, or as the writer explains the butterfly effect. Good read if you REALLY want to go back in time!
