Synopsis

Victor Hugo's tale of injustice, heroism and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him. But his attempts to become a respected member of the community are constantly put under threat: by his own conscience, when, owing to a case of mistaken identity, another man is arrested in his place; and by the relentless investigations of the dogged policeman Javert. It is not simply for himself that Valjean must stay free, however, for he has sworn to protect the baby daughter of Fantine, driven to prostitution by poverty. A compelling and compassionate view of the victims of early nineteenth-century French society, Les Misrables is a novel on an epic scale.

I have only good things to say about this book. It is an amazing story of humanity. There is every side of life shown here. And through it all, the characters keep trying, keep fighting, keep living. Some try to do good and overcome. Others stick to the darker side of life. There was deep tragedy in characters like Fantine. Comic relief with characters like Gavroche. And a love story with Cosette and Marius. But no story touches the heart like that of Jean Valjean. His life can be summed up in saying a mistake made is a lesson learned and many lives bettered.

Well written, however the author seems to wonder off the main theme. A lot of phrases and idioms are written in French which may at times discourage the reader. Humor, romance, action, intense drama are all in this one hell of a long book. 1800 pages.
