Synopsis

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Riveting and horrifying

I was compelled to continue reading even though the story horrified me. Only the second Steven King I have read and maybe the last. What an imagination to create such a plot.Big Jim should drive fear into the heart of anyone dealing with used car salesmen.

Great story. Grabs your attention right from the beginning. You really get to love and hate the characters in this book. Another great story by S.K.

The story grabbed me from the start. There are so many characters that I wanted to find out what happened to them all as the story progressed. Some I really grew to dislike and I didn't want to read that part. Others I quite enjoyed and wanted to know more. In typical Stephen king style, he went I to great detail on things he didn't need to and skipped over parts that could use detail. Over all it's a decent book with an interesting ending. I wouldn't read it more than once though.

I found this book to be particularly creepy and left me frightened as well as reflective. When we disregard the value of non human lives are we more or less evil compared to when we purposely hurt fellow human beings?

This is a great book that I have not been able to put down. Chester's Mill is a town filled with fantastic characters that you know are lurking in any community. The situation with the dome causes people to change, and this is captured very well by Stephen King.

Great book, really made me think about the society we live in. I read the book first and liked it much better than the t.v show. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good thought provoking read.

This book is exceptional. It has everything you would want: characters you love to hate, mysterious over-shadowing plot, brilliant writing, and of course, shocking plot twists! This was my first Stephen King book, and even though it's over one-thousand pages, I was reading 200-300 pages a day. Definitely my favourite book by my favourite author!

Really great book. You're mesmerized by the insanity of the situation and shocked to see how society breaks down in such a situation. Really captures your attention and I could not put this book down until I'd finished it 3days later. It's slight extraterrestrial influences leaves more to the imagination and the absurdity of the characters makes this book gripping! A definite must read!!

don't bother with the TV show, the book is much better as is usually the case. A bit long (as per usual with Mr. King) but it held my attention throughout.

Stephen King strikes again! "Under the Dome" was brilliant and almost believable... almost. The characters were well written, I felt like I would know them if I ran into them on the street. Thank goodness that won't happen. The dome was scary in the sense that something like this could actually happen, one day.

Great read! Kept me involved and at the edge of my seat from page one. I actually felt the joy the characters must have felt when the dome lifted and the fresh air poured in! Thank you for sharing this adventure!

Hardest read ever. Goes on and on. Disappointing if you have expectations that it will be like the TV series (not a fault of the writer of course).

I loved this book. I had a terrible time putting it down and, since my favourite time to read is right before I turn off my light to go to sleep, I lost quite a few zzzzz's!
