Synopsis

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood.  Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.  It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard.  So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini.  In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails.  As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile.  But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater.  Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion.  His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit.  Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit.

Well written, hard to put down.

The story sweeps you in highs and lows just like the ocean that the characters had to endure. Sharing the lives of both the main persons but also of the ones dear to them was extremely well done.

Wow! I cannot believe how much POW's indured during the war. Their strength, both physical and mental is truly inspirational. As the daughter of a WWII veteran I am always amazed at how my father survived the atrocities he faced at the hands of the nazis. It is important to have these stories told, Lest We Forget...

Well told and put together. The story paints a oil ture of a rebellious boy challenging himself and his peers. A young many how found his calling in both running and as a bombardier. A man who returned from war damaged but not totally lost. The route to find himself took him to the bottom of a pit so deep it almost destroyed him. He rediscovered himself in faith and and rebuilt himself with the love of his wife Cynthia. Once I started I read it (over two days) I found it hard to put down. Ww

I could not put this book down. Laura Hillenbrand has given the readers a story of courage, determination, and forgiveness that needed to be told. I've read many stories of heroes from the war, but the story of Louis Zamperini will stay with me forever. I don't know how an individual can endure what he endured, but thanks to Laura Hillenbrand who magnificently described his life story, we can better understand the spirit of the man that kept him going against all odds. Awesome!

So sorry he lived a very violent childhood inflicting pain on others and then suffered the same in incarceration. I hope he has found peace now.

A truly amazing story; riveting and compelling. At times, I had to keep reading and could not put the book down. I now have a greater insight into certain actions which were taken during World War II.
