Synopsis

The heartbreaking portrait of a large, rural southern family’s attempt to grapple with their mother’s desperate decision to make her newborn son into the daughter she will never have

When the seventh child of the Peace family, named Perfect, turns eight, her mother Emma Jean tells her bewildered daughter, “You was born a boy. I made you a girl. But that ain’t what you was supposed to be. So, from now on, you gon’ be a boy. It’ll be a little strange at first, but you’ll get used to it, and this’ll be over after while.” From this point forward, his life becomes a bizarre kaleidoscope of events. Meanwhile, the Peace family is forced to question everything they thought they knew about gender, sexuality, unconditional love, and fulfillment.

"Enjoyable" is the wrong word to describe this book purely due to the subject matter, but it was. It moved me, it intrigued me, it disgusted me and it left me feeling a little sad... But the good kind of sad, if you know what I mean. I loved the "Southern Ebonics" used throughout. I found that it added to the authenticity of the story and added another dimension to the characters. I know some people found it distracting, but I thought it was spot on. I've even found myself using some of the phrases - much to my husband's dismay! Shonuff! Perfect Peace, for me, is a story of abuse and the lasting effects it has on a person's mental well-being. How a deep-rooted need to be better to our children than our parents were to us can sometimes drive us to repeat mistakes, or to make a whole set of new ones. It also raises some interesting questions about gender roles and sexuality - whether you agree with Daniel Black's take on them or not, I guarantee that Perfect Peace will make you reconsider what you thought you knew.
